Social unrest in China

Unrest and riots in China have gotten serious enough that party newspapers are acknowledging they are happening and that reforms are needed to end the increasing disparity between rich and poor.

Western China is semi-arid desert and has little in common with Beijing ethnically, culturally, or anything else. And that’s where much of the unrest is.

Spamming as mental illness

Spammers pay large amounts of money to have their millions of mostly unreadable spams sent out. So what’s the payoff to them, especially considering the risk?

Maybe they’re compulsive gamblers

I believe the leaders of the gangs you can hire to do spam runs are in it for the money. But the people paying them for most of the spam runs have some mental disorder. There’s nothing rational about it. And the spammers-for-hire know it and exploit the illness.

More global warming portents

Ice free Arctic by 2040

This from US researchers, who say most Arctic ice will be gone by 2040 with the tipping point coming in 2025. Rumors that Dubya said the researchers were “terrorists who hate freedom” are probably untrue.

Siberia as granary

Russia is getting warmer, thus “Siberia in that case will become the world’s granary and Russia will be a clear winner.” (I can see capitalists exulting in the chance to make a fast buck by importing Siberian grain even as their vacation beach homes flood.)
