National methamphetamine awareness day

Here’s the proclamation from Dubya himself, whom I’m guessing is not exactly a stranger to white powders. But I digress… The proclamation links to which I initially figured would be a hysterical government site with inaccurate information. I was wrong. It has plenty of offer, and present the facts about meth addiction, and the damage it wreaks, in a straightforward, useful manner.

From their Overview of meth

During FY 2003, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made 5,766 arrests for methamphetamine, representing 21.5% of all DEA drug arrests.

Between January 12, 2005 and September 30, 2005, there were 3,703 Federal offenders sentenced for methamphetamine-related charges in U.S. Courts. The majority of offenders were white (54.8%), male (84.0%), and U.S. citizens (74.5%). Approximately 21.6% of the Federal methamphetamine offenders sentenced during this time had a weapon involved with their drug offense

At this time the most effective treatments for methamphetamine addiction are cognitive behavioral interventions. These approaches are designed to help modify the patient’s thinking, expectancies, and behaviors and to increase skills in coping with various life stressors. Methamphetamine recovery support groups also appear to be effective adjuncts to behavioral interventions that can lead to long-term drug-free recovery.

Clandestine [meth] drug labs cause three main types of harm: physical injury from explosions, fires, chemical burns, and toxic fumes; environmental hazards; and child endangerment.

There’s even a bit of humor.

There are two general types of clandestine drug labs. One is the “super” lab a large, highly organized lab that can manufacture 10 or more pounds of methamphetamine per production cycle. To date, super labs are concentrated in southern California and Mexico. The other type of lab is smaller, and often referred to as “mom and pop” or “Beavis and Butthead” labs.

White Light, White Heat – The Velvet Underground

White light, go on messing up my brain
White light, it’s gonna drive me insane
White heat, it tickles me down to my toes
White light I said now, goodness knows, do it

I surely do love watching that stuff ooze itself in

The Pusher – Steppenwolf

You know I’ve seen a lot of people walking ’round
With tombstones in their eyes.
But the pusher don’t care
If you live — or if you die.

Well, most pushers sell drugs to support their own habit and are just as strung out as anyone else. But we don’t need more tombstones, that’s for sure.

Prolonged meth use can also rot your teeth. In the pantheon of nasty drugs, meth is up there with crack and heroin. I was a meth addict for a couple of years in the late 60’s. If you’re addicted, please get help and get clean while you still have functioning brain cells – yes, meth can permanently damage brain cells too.
