Lynne Stewart gets 28 months

That’s a whole lot less than it could have been for this 67-year-old radical lawyer who often defends those the mainstream despises. The sentence is hardly the best of all worlds but way better than the 30 years she could have gotten. She say some of her actions “were ill-advised.” The neocons wanted her scalp on a belt on bogus terrorism charges, and they almost got it.

Here’s some background on Stewart and the case.

She will no longer be able to practice law but will not die in prison either.

Bill Paparian campaign endorsements and support

Bill Paparian is running for Congress as a Green in CA-29. He’s hardcore antiwar, calls for the impeachment of Bush, and has succeeded in making his campaign way more visible than is the norm. He’s sent out thousands of mailers, volunteers are phone-banking every night, and the buzz is building. This is a campaign to watch and support.

Paparian4Congress

Paparian had an open house yesterday at the campaign office. I video’ed some of the endorsements and statements of support.

Danny Bakewell Sr., long-time activist in L.A., real estate developer, and publisher of the L.A. Sentinel (the largest Black-owned weekly newspaper in the west) endorses Paparian. YouTube video.

Bob McCloskey, Democratic primary candidate for Congress in CA-29 in 2006 endorses Paparian. That’s right, a previous Democratic candidate for CA-29 is now endorsing a Green for that seat rather than the Democrat. YouTube video.

Preston Wood of the ANSWER Coalition in Los Angeles voices support for Bill Paparian. YouTube video.

(Bill and Preston are friends. I’m webmaster for Bill’s campaign site for which I’m paid a modest amount)

Death-bed repentance from the pro-war left

Lenin’s Tomb details the evasions and moral blindness of those on the left who originally supported the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and now, since it’s obvious the US/UK have lost, suddenly ‘oppose’ them.

Like John Kerry and the rest of Democrats who voted for the war, their born-again opposition to the war isn’t opposition at all. They see the wars have gone badly, that the neocons botched the job, so they want a better strategy for winning. This is no different from what Bush is doing.

Kerry’s recent comments on the war blasted Bush, saying “we must change course in Iraq”. But does he favor bringing the troops home now? Of course not. Rather, he wants a continuation of the attempted imperialist domination of the Middle East, with a new battle plan so the U.S. wins this time around.

Which of course, isn’t being antiwar at all.

Man criticizes Cheney, gets arrested, files lawsuit

He told Cheney “Your policies in Iraq are reprehensible” and the Secret Service arrested him. Now he’s suing.

This isn’t the first such lawsuit for such grotesque violations of free speech.
