L.A. Speak out against police brutality

This Sat., July 22, 2-4 pm
Gather at corner of Hollywood & Argyle, L.A.
(Metro Red Line stop Hollywood & Vine.)

All anti-racist, progressive people are encouraged to participate in a People’s Speak Out against racism and police brutality. The speak out will be at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Argyle Ave. to show the LAPD that protesters and the community will not be intimidated by police terror.

On July 8, the LAPD viciously attacked a peaceful, multinational crowd of hundreds who had gathered to demonstrate against the racist, anti-immigrant “Minuteman Project” and their supporters. Without any provocation, the police beat dozens and falsely arrested six people, all of them anti-Minutemen protesters. Just before the police riot, top LAPD brass on the scene were chumming around with the fascist Minutemen on the other side of the street.

Lawsuits are pending, and the video clearly shows the savage, unprovoked beating. We are returning to precisely the same street corner to speak out against police brutality. I expect it to be quite peaceful. LAPD would be insane to club people again, given the repercussions from what happened July 8.

BTW, Street corner protests like this one are completely legal. You do not need a permit.

And I’m looking to buy my first video camera.

Lieberman /Lamont. Both pro-war

A tale of two imperialists

An examination of Lamont’s positions and statements reveal a clear support for U.S. imperialism in the Middle East and around the world. His positions are similar to those of Rep. John Murtha—supporting U.S. interventions but disagreeing on tactics to carry out those policies.

This isn’t even anti-war Lite. Rather, it’s complete support for the war but just wanting different tactics because the US is clearly losing.

Lamont’s web site states “that the war in Iraq has diverted far too many of our dollars, and too much of our attention, from our needs back home.” But Lamont stops far short of calling for complete and immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops. Instead, he supports Murtha’s plan for redeployment of “frontline troops out of harm’s way” and states that U.S troops should “continue to provide logistical and training support as long as we are asked.”Lamont fully ignores the will of the Iraqi people, who are against any foreign occupiers and are courageously fighting back. At no time has Lamont questioned U.S. imperialism and the many war crimes perpetrated against the Iraqi people, instead presenting minor changes so that a “winning strategy” can be reached. Unlike Lamont’s demagoguery, a true anti-war position calls for immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq, followed by reparations paid to the people of Iraq.

Polls now show Lamont at least even, if not ahead, closing from several points behind in just a month. (Ok, I may have to eat my words saying the loathsome Lieberman will win…)

Rather than pretend protest against the war(s), why not choose the real thing instead.

August 12. Emergency marches in DC, LA, SF, and many more cities against the Lebanon invasion.
October 28 National Day of Action. Locally coordinated anti-war protests from coast to coast.
