That’s two

Harkin backs Feingold’s censure effort

Yeah, yeah, I know, the other Democrats are “choosing their fights”, “keeping their powder dry”, “not being rash”, all of which could make sense except they never actually get in there and fight, do they? I guess all that “keeping their powder dry” is so exhausting they don’t  have any energy left for anything else.

RIAA sues itself for music distribution

From Joe Rasmussen - Entertainment Editor

The Recording Industry Association of America has taken its strongest step yet in its battle to stop music piracy, filing a lawsuit against the nation’ s largest distributor of copyrighted music, itself, on March 28.

“Though suing ourselves may seem like an extreme and absurd step to some, we decided that if we are going to go after new mothers for singing lullabies to their infants, we couldn’t in good conscience allow ourselves to go free,” said RIAA president Bill Simpson.

The RIAA is the largest distributor of recorded music in America, as
it represents all of the major record labels who produce the majority of music released to the public and nearly all of the mainstream records. “As the largest single distributor of music, it really makes sense that the RIAA would try to stop itself from distributing music,” said industry analyst James Griffin.

UN creates new rights council over US objections

The United Nations General Assembly created a new U.N. human rights body by an overwhelming majority on Wednesday, ignoring objections from the United States.

Ambassadors broke out in sustained applause when the vote was announced: 170-4 with 3 abstentions.

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton got a well-deserved kick in the teeth on this.

90,000 flyers

Here at ANSWER LA, we’ve been organizing for Saturday’s antiwar march and rally for over three months.

We’ve printed and distributed over 90,000 flyers, pasted up thousands of posters, done outreach at dozens of events, worked with many other organizations, made 1,500 phone calls, sent numerous emails out on the listserv, faxed and called several dozen media outlets, and held many organizing and planning meetings.

That’s what it takes to put on a major demonstration - months of planning and work. No, we’re not paid. What we’re doing in L.A. is being repeated in over 200 other cities, with dedicated activists working to end the insanity of these wars for empire and oil, planning mass protests for this weekend.

Will it rain here on Saturday? Maybe. It did last year, and thousands still came. Lives are being destroyed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet neocons want more invasions and war, like in Iran - North Korea and Venezuela too. So, what’s a little rain when innocents in Badhdad are getting their homes blown up?

Join us. The national site has a list of US demos, ANSWER LA has logistics for Saturday.

PS The Net is great for spreading information. But it is not, and can never be, a substitute for real life organizing. Nor can it bring about change by itself. The change comes from elsewhere, the Net can only help to transmit it. Signing net petitions and leaving comments on blogs will never bring about the real change this country needs. Bloggers need to take that energy and get into the streets and communities and organize.

Climate change ‘irreversible’

Sea ice in the Arctic has failed to re-form for the second consecutive winter, raising fears that global warming may have tipped the polar regions in to irreversible climate change far sooner than predicted.
