Peres loses, Sharon ruling coalition may fall

Israeli elder statesman Shimon Peres was today defeated in his party’s leadership contest by a trade unionist who promised to pull out of Ariel Sharon’s ruling coalition.

The defeat of Mr Peres appears to reflect support for Mr Peretz’s <the new leader> call for Labour to return to its socialist roots.

There’s been a decided worldwide shift to the left these past few days. Tony Blair lost a crucial vote and no longer controls his own party, Peres is gone and with him quite possibly Sharon, Schwarzenegger’s right-wing agenda was soundly defeated, and Dubya vocally backed a Republican for governor of Virginia who promptly lost, causing party insiders to say Bush is now radioactive and to be avoided.

Let’s seize the moment.

Clueless

On a day of fierce recriminations, Republican allies and friends of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared shaken Wednesday by the collapse of his agenda in this week’s special election, saying he needs to recapture the confidence of voters by jettisoning some of his political advisors.

Those darned advisors! They must have given him bad advice. How deeply tragic. But wait… could the real problem be the blundering, inept Arnold, and not the advisors he hired?

All the fish that’s fit to wrap

Miller was part of the team that won a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on the al Qaeda terrorist network. However, her reporting on Iraq’s weapons programs was widely criticized when no such programs emerged after the fall of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

The paper’s executive editor, Bill Keller, was complimentary of Miller in a Wednesday memo to his staff. "She displayed fierce determination and personal courage both in pursuit of the news and in resisting assaults on the freedom of news organizations to report," states the memo posted on the Times Web site.

And as for her makin’ shit up so the neocons could have their war, well, the NY Times is strangely silent about that. Ditto for her going to jail to protect liars in the White House.

Bluegrass FLOW. For Local Ownership of Water

Lexington Kentucky wants to buy back their water company from German conglomerate RWE. The courts just ruled against a vote on this based on a technicality. Bluegrass FLOW continues to fight for Lexington to own their water. They document how the current private ownership has, among other things, resulted in billing errors and lost revenue for the city.

Bluegrass FLOW

And it’s going on in Pennsylvania too.

Water battle heading to arbitration

Lehigh County, two townships oppose sale to Pennsylvania Aqua.

The fight to keep a local water company away from water-giant Aqua Pennsylvania Inc. will be assigned to an arbitrator this week as a result of protests filed by several municipalities and more than 200 customers.

It’s clear. The people want public ownership of their water.
