Suburban sprawl

The Hartford Courant in Connecticut has been running a series of articles on suburban sprawl,
on the idiocy of building ever larger homes in the suburbs, which
destroys more forests and makes the region ever more dependent on cars.

That a major regional paper would be doing this, and not just
cheerleading for real estate interests, is unusual and laudatory. I
grew up in Connecticut and after a week vacation Sue, and I have
decided to escape from Los Angeles. The traffic in LA grows ever worse.
So does the sprawl and congestion. And little of substance is being
done to mitigate any of it.

And while sprawl around Hartford is getting worse, it’s nothing
compared to LA, discussion of it is on the table and people are
actively looking for alternatives.

Merkel to become German chancellor

Neo-Thatcherite Angela Merkel will probably become German chancellor
after a close hard-fought election. However, the SPD made her pay a
price.

The SPD has
come out of the deal with eight cabinet seats - two more than the CDU -
and control of the foreign, finance, justice, labour, health,
transport, environment and international development ministries.

Collateral damage from her election includes the German Green Party, which is no longer a member of the ruling coalition.
