On a Windows computer, there’s a text file called HOSTS that can be used to block websites from your browser and computer. Download the free hosts file
from mvps. It lists over 1000 sites that deliver ads, spyware,
hijackers, trojans, and other parasites. By simply downloading this
file to your pc, you block those sites from ever appearing in your
browser, and thus from possibly delivering software to attack your pc.
It simple to install. Download the zip file, unzip it, then copy the
hosts file to where it is stored on your computer (locations vary based
on which version of Windows you are running). Then go to a major
news website and you may see blank spaces where ads used to be. It will
also stop access to your computer from hordes of nasty websites who
wish only to infect your system with something.
Note: Sometimes the hosts file might block sites you don’t want
blocked. If so, edit the hosts file with a text editor and delete the
website name. You’ll then be able to access the site.
