Yes, the name is real

When I’ve told friends in L.A. about this Massachusetts lake name, no one believed me!

Now the NY Times confirms it.

It’s pronounced the way it’s spelled…

It’s Doo Dah Parade time!

The Los Angeles Greens will be marching again tomorrow in the 28th Annual Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena. This zany parody of Rose Bowl Parade draws hundreds of thousands of spectators and is seen by millions worldwide.

The theme chosen this year by Los Angeles Greens is –

Post Partisan Depression!

Lots of Kerry-kids ‘n’ Cheney-childerns ‘n’ Bushie-baby-carriages…well, reasonable facsimiles, anyway…

Our Green Party theme is “POST PARTISAN DEPRESSION” We want to connect with deep feelings that are out there NOW. It’s pervasive.

We are acknowledging both the election and the heavy mood with a doodah touch. People might need a bit of a break from more messages–we’ve been messaged so much. That the Greens make an emotional and humor-filled connection with the crowd seems very important this year.

I’ll be there taking photos…! (And in Green fashion, will take the subway to get there!)

Wireless home networks. Menace or peril?

Ok, so some wireless networks work great all the time. Mine didn’t. My two PCs would sometimes not find the wireless net, sometimes one or the other of them would lose access to the Net, plus the signal strength would vary wildly - and all for no apparent reason. Sometimes just walking in front of the Range Expander (which I had to buy to boost the signal from the router which is all of twenty feet away) would cause the PCs to lose connection. Did I mention the PCs were eight feet from the Range Expander?

After several hours talking with LinkSys tech support and with knowledgeable friends, I now know far more about these nets than I ever wanted to, and could install them elsewhere if needed. Another PC, a notebook PC which is just a few feet from the router also has scattered wireless net problems. My two PCs had considerably more problems than that.

Wireless nets are great when they work, however in my opinion, the technology is nowhere near being ready for prime time, not especially if it’s for your business, which my PCs are. Most of my business, not to mention the blog, is via the Net. I can’t not be on the Net or to have a flaky connection.

So I did the only thing left to do. Bought a bunch of cable and wired my two PCs to the router. Bang. The connections are rock solid and the transfer rate is faster.

Pension fund looted

The Teamster’s Central States pension fund, which was forced into the hands of Wall Street because it was “corrupt” is now approaching insolvency. Under the managment of pricey investment banks, the money is vanishing and pensions for retirees are being cut.

How could this happen?

But the kinds of investments that make sense for such a fund - like long-term bonds that will mature as members enter retirement - are not attractive to most money managers, because they generate few fees. Consequently, very few pension funds use such strategies today.

Translation: They didn’t give a fuck about the retirees and instead generated fat fees for themselves with risky investments. Now many retired Teamsters are having their pensions slashed. And none of this needed to happen.

In fact, the pension fund did much better when the money was used to build Las Vegas hotels.

Union pension funds performed better when run by mobsters rather than Wall St. firms.

“Say hello to the new boss, same as the old boss”, except in this case, the new boss is even more predatory, avaricious - aa well as incompetent. At least the mob returned the money with a profit to the pension fund.

This is just another example of the massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy that is going on unabated. The Bushies want to privatize Social Security and let Wall Street run the money. Given the above do you think your retirement money will be safe?
