Why the wingnuts are wrong…

Why the wingnuts are wrong about the “forged” documents

Step by step, using logic and fact, Daily Kos shreds the arguments about the “forged” Dubya documents.

A few examples

This typeface — Times New Roman — didn’t exist in the early 1970s.

There are several problems with this theory.  First, Times New Roman, as a typeface, was invented in 1931.  Second, typewriters were indeed available with Times New Roman typefaces.

Documents back then didn’t have superscripted ‘th’ characters

That one was easy.  Yes, many typewriter models had shift-combinations to create ‘th’, ‘nd’, and ‘rd’

This document uses proportional spacing, which didn’t exist in the early 1970s.

Turns out, it did.  The IBM Executive electric typewriter was manufactured in four models, A, B, C, and D, starting in 1947, and featured proportional spacing.

This entire argument about the documents being forged was started by the repellent, extreme right wing blog, Little Green Footballs, and then picked up uncritically by mass media. DailyKos is the only site I’ve seen so far that actually researched the claims. One wonders why the mass media couldn’t have done the same.

PS Left I On the News has also posted, refuting the claim the Washington Post swallowed whole without questioning.

Iraq

Iraq

Freedom of the press, just write what we say

A major European news network aired a video last night that showed the results of a U.S. bombing of a suspected terrorist safehouse in Fallujah. The video contained graphic images of four dead Iraqi infants. The airing of the video caused deep consternation among U.S. military officers in Baghdad, who threatened to seek the removal of the reporter and producer responsible for writing and taping the piece. “I don’t like your f —– ing work,” a military officer said to one of the newsmen. “Well, we don’t like your f —-ing work,” the newsman snapped back.

al Qaeda says US doomed in Iraq

Zawahri appeared in a new videotape aired on the Arabic Al Jazeera television station, taunting Washington by saying fighters had turned U.S. plans for the oil-rich country upside down.

Cheney says Iraq harbored Al Qaeda, uh huh

This is just more of the same old making-shit-up propaganda from Cheney. Saddam and al Qaeda were, of course, scorpions in a bottle. Saddam ran a secular state and had no use for religious fundamentalists or anyone challenging his power.

Women near Twin Towers had smaller babies

Babies born to women who were pregnant and living near the World Trade Center when the Sept. 11 attacks occurred were smaller and had shorter gestation periods than those whose mothers lived elsewhere in New York, according to a study published Wednesday.

Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day

“The Republicans have the best propaganda out there since Lenin, and they just make stuff up and they keep repeating it, and hope people are going to believe it.” — Howard Dean, to the Associated Press.

Sounds more like a tactice of Nazi minister of propaganda Joesph Goebbels who is reputed to have said, if you repeat a lie loud enough and often enough, people will believe it.
