Hey kids! Uncle Sam needs your help again!!

A senior Republican lawmaker said Tuesday that deteriorating security in Iraq may force the United States to reintroduce the military draft.

Aging men in power are sometimes oh so willing to send young to die, aren’t they? But will their sons and grandsons get drafted? I think not, they’ll make damn sure of that.

“Why shouldn’t we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?” <Senator Chuck> Hagel said, arguing that restoring compulsory military service would force “our citizens to understand the intensity and depth of challenges we face.”

Heck, it could also force students to organize and mobilize on campuses, just like in the 60’s. You remember the 60’s, Senator, when campuses and cities blew up all over the country? Sure you do. You want colleges erupting, just bring back the draft. That’ll do the trick.

The call to consider a imposing a draft comes just days after the Pentagon moved to extend the missions of some 20,000 of the 135,000 US troops in Iraq.

And the – what was it – 90 billion to pay for the war that a few months ago Bush said we’d won? Well, Lord have mercy they’ve gone and spent all of it, so they need more, but just a paltry 4 billion this time.

But, it’s just not going well, is it? Leaked CPA memo warns of civil war

According to a newly-leaked Coalition Provisional Authority memo written by a US government official, the occupation of Iraq has created an environment rife with corruption and sectarianism likely to result in civil war.

The memo, obtained by independent reporter Jason Vest details political corruption among American-appointed Iraqi politicians, the flow of Iranian money into the country, and the proliferation of militias and dependence of Interim Governing Council members on them.

The title for this post came from the “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag“, by Country Joe and the Fish, which was the anthem of the Vietnam war protests. This time around, it’s a different country, but the same old song and dance, isn’t, it?

Come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He’s got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We’re gonna have a whole lotta fun.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don’t hesitate,
Send ’em off before it’s too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

What goes around, comes around.
