Soople?

Soople?

Soople offers several dfferent Google iterfaces.

One cool thing about Google is that they have a very simple interface, which keeps three billion pages from being too intimidating. On the other hand that simple interface disguses a lot of advanced searching options. Soople brings them to light with a nicely-done set of alternate interfaces.

It’s official! Unity statement for…

It’s official! Unity statement for March 20 demos

This unity statement is significant in that, I believe for the first time ever, “an end to occupation in Palestine” is specifically mentioned as a unity point for nationwide antiwar rallies. This was agreed to by hundreds of coalitions and organizations, including ANSWER and United for Justice and Peace.

Joint statement between March 20th Mobilizing Committee and March 20th National Coalition concerning New York City march and rally

On March 20th, the one year anniversary of the U.S. war against Iraq, a Global Day of Action will bring hundreds of thousands of people into the  streets in cities around the world. In New York City the March 20th Mobilizing Committee and the March 20th National Coalition are organizing a unified demonstration opposing the criminal and empire-building policies of the Bush administration and their impact abroad and at home.

We will march for an end to the U.S. occupation and corporate control of Iraq and to bring the troops home now.

We will march for an end to the occupation of Palestine.

We will march to fund human needs, restore cuts in social programs and against the ever-expanding attacks on all immigrants, labor rights and everyone’s civil liberties - and we will stand united against racism here and abroad.

We represent diverse communities and organizations opposed to the Bush Administration policies for many reasons, but on March 20th we will march together.

By working together our two coalitions are confident we will mobilize a massive turnout on March 20th and send a strong, clear message.

Onward!

Another victory! US withdraws subpoena…

Another victory! US withdraws subpoena of antiwar meeting

Facing growing public pressure from civil liberties advocates, federal prosecutors on Tuesday dropped subpoenas that they issued last week ordering antiwar protesters to appear before a grand jury and ordering a university to turn over information about the protesters.

From the National Lawyers Guild press release

The U.S. Attorney announced this afternoon that it withdrew the subpoena seeking records relating to the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) chapter at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Subpoenas directed at four activists were also withdrawn. The NLG subpoena sought records relating its leadership and to a forum held at Drake on November 15, 2003, the day before a protest at which 12 were arrested. A gag order placed on employees of Drake University has also been lifted.

NLG President Michael Avery said, “The government was forced to back down in this case and it shows that people can and should stand up to the government when it is abusing its powers. The Lawyers Guild is grateful to our many friends and allies who supported us in the face of this attack by the government. This experience demonstrates that the American people cherish their right of free expression and the right of political groups to dissent from government policies.”

The NLG does huge amounts of behind the scenes work negotiating with police and authorities prior to big demos. Plus, they are always present at demos, monitoring the police, negotiating when needed, etc. They’re the people wearing the iridescent green caps. Be happy they are there!

Bearish Signals from company insiders…

Bearish Signals from company insiders at record levels

When company insiders (members of the board, officers, etc.) become heavy net sellers of stock of their company, this usually signals a market top. Right now, insider selling is at very high levels. But there’s been no correction. Yet.

Insiders tend to be early in their signals, but they tend to be right. While we agree that the present signal has been earlier than usual, this has just acted to increase our own concern about the potential shocks to the rally. Case in point is the market jitters on display last Wednesday after the Fed’s minor statement edit. Is that really the way a fundamentally undervalued market would have reacted? We don’t think so.
