New Iraq army hit by resignations

US plans to create a new Iraqi army have suffered a setback after hundreds of recruits resigned.

The army’s first 700-man battalion lost 300 troops who were within weeks of being deployed, Pentagon officials say.

Mr. Calculator tells me 42% of this new “army” deserted before their training was completed. It’s difficult to fathom how the Pentagon could treat recruits so badly they would resign in such large numbers, but apparently they managed to do just that.
