Tainted dough?

Tainted dough?

The SF mayor election is Tuesday. Green Matt Gonzalez has a slight lead and big momentum. Gavin Newsom, darling of the business community, has blown a huge lead even with all the money Wall Street is sending him.

Gavin Newsom’s flood of campaign cash isn’t flowing just from San Francisco’s elite:  there’s a sleazy Wall Street connection.

Many of Newsom’s top donors are players in the high finance arena: investment bankers, venture capitalists, hedge fund managers, and the like.

Golly, you don’t suppose they want something for their money, do you?

And these dimbulbs are supposed…

And these dimbulbs are supposed to catch terrorists?

Did you die on 9/11? If so, the government would like a word with you..

A woman whose husband died in the WTC disaster received a letter today from the Department of Commerce, requesting the deceased’s assistance with their investigations. Presumably, many of the other victim’s families received this letter too.  After all, they *were* witnesses, weren’t they?!

Democratic establishment lining up behind…

Democratic establishment lining up behind Dean

Dean will be the Democratic candidate. Count on it.

Now, we’re seeing most of the outright opposition to Dean evaporate, and this week proved the turning point. The latest NH, IA, and MA polls. The $50K for the Florida Democratic Party. The realization of what the SEIU and AFSCME endorsements meant, the realization that it would take a miracle to overtake Dean given his current advantages in support, money, and most important (and most often overlooked) — his ground organization.

(Little known secret — just about every Democratic candidate is trying to find graceful ways to crash the next Dean Meetup seeking support.)

And the best path towards that money and the avid support of the Dean army? Simple. Line up behind Dean. Praise the man. Praise his innovative campaign. And, most important of all, praise his supporters.

The establishment wants as much of that Dean magic as they can capture.

The plummeting dollar

The plummeting dollar

Brought to you by Dubya and Co.

Something ominous is happening when the United States reports its biggest surge in productivity in 20 years, as it did Wednesday, and yet the dollar plunges to an all-time low against the euro.

The dollar is sinking these days on good news and bad, and the explanation is pretty simple: Investors around the world are worried that the Bush administration’s policies are eroding the value of the U.S. currency. So they’re rushing to unload greenbacks, in what could soon become a full-blown financial crisis.

“I’m appalled at what’s happening to the dollar,” says investment banker Felix Rohatyn, a former U.S. ambassador to France. “A basic responsibility of a government is to maintain the value of its currency.”

The nightmare scenario: Between them, China and Japan now hold more than $1 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds, the trader estimates. But with the declining dollar, the Asian giants have suffered severe losses on these portfolios. If they decided to hedge just 20 percent of their dollar exposure, they could drive the dollar down from this week’s low of about $1.21 against the euro to $1.35, contends the trader, and other sellers would trigger a further weakening to $1.45 or so. Facing that sort of decline, the Fed would have to boost interest rates to protect the currency. And higher rates, in turn, would drive down the U.S. stock market.

The Bush administration seems comfortable with a cheaper dollar because it’s a way of stimulating demand for American products abroad and sustaining the U.S. economic recovery. In other words, it’s good politics.

And fuck everyone and everything else.

Strike hurts Albertsons, bodes ill for competitor

If Albertsons earnings report on Friday is any indication, the strike in Southern California is having an even bigger-than-expected effect on the grocery chains.

The strike numbers were shocking in terms of the total amount it’s costing,” said Mark Hugh Sam, who covers the grocery chains as an analyst for Morningstar.

Albertsons’ report could portend even worse results at rivals Safeway and Kroger
