Armageddon 2004?

Armageddon 2004?

A labor organizer friend tells me that many unions are preparing to do whatever is needed to defeat George Bush. If that means draining their treasury to do it, then so be it.

As oft-mentioned here recently, George Soros and other billionaires and centi-millionaires are also preparing to destroy George Bush. And “destroy” is, I think, not too strong a word.

The Right, judging from the newsalerts I get tracking Soros stories, is somewhere between stunned and apoplectic about Soros. Hey, a billionaire currency speculator who says Bush is the biggest threat to world peace and who is prepared to spend massive sums to defeat him is their worst nightmare. The Right is also just now dimly becoming aware of, oh, the Left really loathes Bush, don’t they.

The 2004 Presidential election will be war. It will be “unprincipled”, it will be vicious. It will also be a huge organizing opportunity for those agile enough to avoid be steamrollered.

A really shitty court decision

A really shitty court decision

From Nathan Newman

This decision by the Eighth Circuit overrode a requirement by the Department of Labor that an agribusiness company provide toilets near where workers labored.

You can read through the decision, but it’s a torturous bit of judicial second-guessing of the labor department with the simple goal of making exploited agricultural workers lives as miserable as humanly possible.

Apparently, demanding that a toilet be available within a quarter mile of where you labor in the fields is too much decency to ask.

Well, they could be terrorists you know… If we make them walk long distances to pee, maybe that’ll stop terrorists from invading our sacred strawberry fields.

And folks wonder why I hate courts that are more anti-labor than the Bush Administration itself.

More anti-labor than Bush? Can such a thing be possible???

<Sigh>

Why the Democrats need Matt…

Why the Democrats need Matt Gonzalez to win

Op-ed in SF Chronicle by Peter Gabel

As has so often been the case over the last 30 years, the Democrats have got it all wrong — in fact, exactly backward. The reality is that the Greens have not been a threat to the Democrats, but have rather been their lifeline, re-energizing the progressive base that the Democrats have continued to mistakenly abandon in order to appeal — or, to be more blunt, to pander — to a nonexistent “mainstream” they wrongly imagine sits to their right.

In a variation on the same theme, Schwarzenegger defeated the candidates in the gubernatorial election not because a majority of Californians didn’t support the Democratic Party, but because Gov. Gray Davis didn’t stand for anything strongly enough to mobilize the party’s progressive constituencies to save him from being recalled.

What the Democrats really need on Dec. 9 is not a circling-the-wagons status quo victory for Newsom but an insurgent victory for Gonzalez. That is the result that will give life to the progressive majority, not only in San Francisco but across the country as a whole.

That is also the result that will be most likely help inspire a Democratic victory over George W. Bush next November.

Boy punished for talking about…

Boy punished for talking about gay mom

A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write “I will never use the word ‘gay’ in school again” after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother.

“I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn’t want to repeat it over the phone,” Huff said. “But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word.”

Unbelievable.

Things I don’t want to know about my country

Not only are we outsourcing torture, we’re selling the torturers the tools of their trade.

According to a new
Amnesty International report, the Bush administration approved the sale of almost $20 million worth of equipment that can be used for torture to countries to with a record of using them for that purpose.
