Republicans nervous about Dean

Republicans nervous about Dean

Republicans underestimate Dean.

“A memo being circulated by a prominent Republican polling firm argues that GOPers run a serious risk of underestimating” Howard Dean “as a general election candidate,” Roll Call reports.

From the memo: “The difference between Howard Dean and the rest of the Democrat[ic] candidates is that Dean comes across as a true believer to the base but will not appear threatening to folks in the middle. We are whistling past the graveyard if we think Howard Dean will be a pushover.”

Argentina gets deja vu watching…

Argentina gets deja vu watching California vote

Argentines are watching the California governor recall vote with a sense of deja vu and have this advice to offer: booting out your leaders won’t necessarily solve your problems.

Do they really think they can solve their problems just by changing leaders? We tried that. Believe me, it didn’t work, said Carlos Goleri, an insurance salesman, as he read the newspaper in a downtown Buenos Aires cafe.

“They’re turning into a banana republic just like we are,” he said.

Indeed, California’s problems are huge, and no one really has a clue what to do.

George W. Bush’s medieval presidency

George W. Bush’s medieval presidency

This LA Times Sunday Op-ed explores the religiously-based medieval mindset of the Bushies, who, convinced they alone possess truth, ignore and distort anything that contradicts their worldview. This behavior sounds oddly similar to those Islamic religious theocracies they’re always pointing the finger at.

The difference between the current administration and its conservative forebears is that facts don’t seem to matter at all. They don’t even matter enough to reinterpret. Bush doesn’t read the papers or watch the news, and Condoleezza Rice, his national security advisor, reportedly didn’t read the National Intelligence Estimate, which is apparently why she missed the remarks casting doubt on claims that Iraq was trying to acquire uranium from Africa.

A more sinister aspect to this presidency’s cavalier attitude toward facts is its effort to bend, twist and distort them when it apparently serves the administration’s interests

Every administration spins the facts to its advantage. As the old adage goes, “Figures don’t lie but liars do figure.” But the White House medievalists aren’t just shading the facts. In actively denying or changing them, they are changing the basis on which government has traditionally been conducted: rationality. There is no respect for facts because there is no respect for empiricism.

Some people get great strength from a belief in God. Others become deluded and think God is telling them — and them alone — what to do. Usually, we just lock people like this up for their own safety.

Answers please, Mr Bush

Answers please, Mr Bush

Michael Moore fired his opening salvo against George Bush and his rightwing cronies with his bestseller Stupid White Men. Now the president is in his sights again. In this second extract from his new book <Dude, Where’s My Country> he asks his old enemy seven awkward questions.

The questions (with some of the answers in the article) are

1. Is it true that the Bin Ladens have had business relations with you and your family off and on for the past 25 years?

2. What is the ’special relationship’ between the Bushes and the Saudi royal family

3. Who attacked the US on September 11 - a guy on dialysis from a cave in Afghanistan, or your friend, Saudi Arabia?

4. Why did you allow a private Saudi jet to fly around the US in the days after September 11 and pick up members of the Bin Laden family and fly them out of the country without a proper investigation by the FBI?

5. Why are you protecting the Second Amendment rights of potential terrorists?

6. Were you aware that, while you were governor of Texas, the Taliban travelled to Texas to meet with your oil and gas company friends?

7. What exactly was that look on your face in the Florida classroom on the morning of September 11 when your chief of staff told you, ‘America is under attack’?

Moore is taking huge and serious risks here, and is to be applauded and supported for doing so.

Why vote Green if it…

Why vote Green if it might help Arnold?

Green Party candidate Peter Camejo explains why.

Regardless of the outcome of the recall, the Democrats will still control both houses of the legislature and every other statewide office. Whether or not they will continue to pay attention to our issues after the election will depend, in large part, on the size of the Green vote. If too many Greens abandon the Party and vote for Bustamante, the Democrats will feel they can safely ignore us. On the other hand, if we produce a large Green vote, the Democrats will know that they have to keep paying attention.

That said, Peter understands those voters who cannot place any of the above considerations above their fear of a Republican winning the governorship. It is always a wiser choice to vote Green, but Peter will not condemn those voters who feel forced to vote for a Democrat like Cruz Bustamante.

Vote for Peter Camejo and keep our issues on the front burner.

He also says vote No on the recall.

After flip-flopping on this for a few days, I now plan to take his advice on both votes. Yes both.

Reach out and touch a…

Reach out and touch a telemarketer

After the success of his first article providing the phone number of the American Teleservices Association, and the ensuing reaction by said organization, columnist Dave Barry attacks again, providing the ATA’s new phone number. Read all about it! (the number is 317-816-9336, long distance charges may apply).”

Dave Barry details how his first column, which printed the ATA phone number, caused much gnashing of teeth in the HQ of the demented trolls, er telemarketers.

The ATA received no warning about the article from Barry or anyone connected with him,” Searcy said. “. . . the Barry column has had harmful consequences for the ATA. An ATA staffer has spent about five hours a day for the past six days monitoring the voice mail and clearing out messages.”

That’s correct: The ATA received NO WARNING that it was going to get unwanted calls! Not only that, but these unwanted calls were an INCONVENIENCE for the ATA, and WASTED THE ATA’S TIME!

I just hope nobody interrupted the ATA’s dinner.

Golly, if several thousand people were rude enough to call the ATA again at 317-816-9336, they might have to change their phone number yet again.
