Arnold voted for Prop 187

 Arnold voted for Prop 187

From DailyKos

“For the unitiated, the California GOP’s long slide into oblivion began with its ardent support for Proposition 187 — the ballot initiative that denied health and education benefits to undocumented immigrants.

The issue is a killer, especially with California’s large Latino and Asian communities.

Well, it turns out Schwarzenegger voted for Prop 187.

Furthermore, in a political miscalculation of epic proportions, Arnold named former California Gov. Pete Wilson as chairman of his campaign. Wilson is the architect of Prop 187, and arguably the most hated man in California.

Schwarzenegger has just given lie to his claims of moderation in the eyes of most Californians. Yet his party’s right flank is occupied by Simon and McClintock. In addition, he’s taking oncoming fire from Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing personalities.”

If anyone thought Schwarzegger was a moderate, the above shows that to be utterly false.

Oh, as for Lt. Gov. Bustamente, he’s no progressive – “California Lt. Gov. Bustamante endorses Sen. Joe Lieberman for President”.

Mike Feinstein’s bank records handed…

Mike Feinstein’s bank records handed to D.A.

From the front page of the Santa Monica Daily Press today (pdf)

“Criminal probe into alleged money mishandling goes to Los Angeles DA

The saga of City Councilman Mike Feinstein’s handling of $30,000 in Green Party funds looked like an inside political spat when it began. But now it’s up to the Los Angeles District Attorney to decide if he’s guilty of misappropriating the money.

Feinstein¹s bank records, which were seized by police in July after he failed to voluntarily produce them, were handed over to the DA’s public integrity division late last month. LA Deputy District Attorney Richard Ceballos is in charge of the investigation.”

(I am the Bob Morris mentioned in the story. I filed the criminal and civil complaints against Feinstein which led to this investigation)

100 degrees in Britain

100 degrees in Britain

An unprecedented heat wave is clobbering England, and they have no practice or experience in dealing with it. Buses and subways don’t have air-conditioning. Neither do most homes. The 100 degrees reached yesterday, was the hottest day ever recorded for them.

Here in L.A. this weekend, the ANSWER coalition had a yard sale at a home in Burbank. The temperature peaked out at about 100 each day. Yes, it was hot. However Angelenos know how to deal with heat. Take it slow. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Drink lots and lots of water.

In the UK, MD’s are making public announcements telling people not to jog when it’s 100, and please everyone, stay hydrated. Newspapers are saying, close your curtains and shades in the morning and leave them closed. All of which is obvious advice to us in L.A., but not obvious at all to someone living in London where 80 degrees used to be considered very hot. And there’s more hot weather coming.

More:
Rivers dry up as Europe’s heat wave drags on
Fires blaze in Europe’s heat wave

And golly, do you suppose global warming might be responsible for these freakishly high temperatures???

Recall machinations

Recall machinations

One refreshing difference about the upcoming California recall election that it won’t be the same tired Democrat vs. Republican blah blah that we usually get. Y’know, the “vote for me because the other guy is worse” ploy. Well, that doesn’t work when’s there’s 157 other candidates…

Plus, in a weird way, the candidates all need each other! Why? Because the more noise made about what a doofus Gray Davis is, the better the chance that he will be recalled. Arianna needs Arnold in the race bringing in Republicans to vote Yes on the recall - she just doesn’t want him strong enough to win. Similarly, Arnold needs Arianna and Peter Camejo to convince Lefties to vote Yes on the recall.

It’ll be amusing to watch Lt. Gov. Bustamente try to run a strong campaign while pretending he wants people to vote No on the recall and that he isn’t really stabbing his boss, Gov. Davis, in the back.

As for Davis, for years his strategy has been precisely that of “vote for me because the other guy is worse”. He’s depended on his fund-raising ability to stay in power, and has few real allies and no friends. So now, when he could use a friend, no one is there. Oh, a few labor unions back him, although I doubt the rank and file does.

California is a mess. Unemployment is rising, services are shutting down, taxes are rising - and people are increasingly angry. Let’s hope some of the candidates actually talk about what can by done, and in a real and substantive way. Well, Arnold is already talking in such vapid soundbites that I regret ever saying he was smart. He’ll not be offering any coherent plans. Nor will the bland Bustamente.

Uberroth, Huffington, and Camejo will have intellegent things to say.  Let’s hope we can hear them as this three-dimensional campaign chess game gets underway.
