“Both Feinstein and Bustamante have publicly stated they have no desire to run in the recall election, but the election is almost guaranteed at this point, and the Democrats need a popular moderate that can beat Schwarzeneggar. Feinstein is widely regarded as the Democrats’ only hope. By cutting a deal with Bustamante, she can keep him out of the race, preventing a split vote.
This has the added advantage of getting a Hispanic into the Senate, even though he isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree.”
