Hollywood March to CNN

Tim Robbin, Susan Sarandon, Eddie Vedder, and Pedro Almodovar spoke.

The Hollywood March to CNN was excellent. Why CNN? Tim Robbins (above) explained it perfectly. He said he was at the huge march in London two months ago. The BBS initially reported it as 500,000 people. CNN then claimed it was 150,000. A few hours later, the London Police called the organizers and said it was at least one million. What did CNN do? They “reported” it as 500,000 - 50% less than the police estimate. And that’s why we marched to CNN, and rallied in front of their building. To demand they stop their sorry excuse for reporting and their scarely concealed cheerleading for the war. Hey, I remember when CNN was known for serious investigative reporting, but sadly, those days are long gone. Here’s a few more photos. I posted more photos on la.indymedia.org.

The reason I got such close-ups is because I pushed the portable ANSWER sound system, and thus ended up near the speakers.

San Francisco

San Francisco

The image to the left, from sf.indymedia.org, shows the mood among those in S.F. who are participating in the demos and direct action. S.F. has a long history of political activism, going back at least to the 1930’s when a longshoremans strike shut down the city. Political action is in the DNA of the city.

Anothe major S.F. site is Direct Action Against the War, the coalition that is organizing much of the current street protests.

S.F. will have another march today, as will many other cities across the country.

If it’s battle-proof, can it…

If it’s battle-proof, can it also be kid-proof?

From Boing Boing

MilSpec laptop is dishwasher safe. Paul Boutin reviews the GoBook MAX, a milspec, shockproof, waterproof, heatproof laptop for Slate. It’s exciting hardware, but the war references in the review seem exploitative to me.

But the company’s roughneck and military clientele belies its much larger potential market: professional parents. Finally, a laptop worthy of the term “toddler-proof.” No disastrous crashes to the kitchen floor. No months of data lost to an incident with the sippy cup. Hazardous materials? Toss it in the dishwasher. Need to get out of the house? The handle flips back to mount the MAX open across the wheel of an SUV for mobile use. There’s even an add-on DVD drive for movies.

With the amount of money office workers spend on their cars alone, a couple thousand dollars more for a droppable, dishwasher-safe laptop is a no-brainer bargain in total cost of ownership. Link

L.A. this weekend

L.A. this weekend

Today there’s a march and rally in Hollywood. Assemble Hollywood & Vine, march to CNN and tell them what you think of their war coverage.

Sunday, of course, is the Academy Awards. There’s a rally several blocks away at Sunset & Orange. The buzz is some may attempt an unauthorized march. Be aware that due to the Oscars, the area will have hundreds of police and sheriffs in it, as well as Homeland Security.

Yes, Homeland Security has been popping up here at protests lately. On Wednesday apparently there was major friction between LAPD and Homeland Security. Those arrested at the Westwood Federal Building were taken to the LAPD station in West L.A., brought back to the Federal Building to be booked, then taken back to the West L.A. station to be released.

Ah, aside from the obvious turf war going on here, if Homeland Security can’t even handle 38 arrests without creating chaos, well frankly, I’m just not optimistic about their chances of finding the Evildoers.
