Simple Simon

Simple Simon

A political quiz.

Bill Simon, California Republican candidate for governor was given a new chance in his campaign when a judge overturned a $78 million dollar judgment against his firm, thus freeing him from fraud charges.

An astute candidate would take advantage of this huge piece of favorable news by

1) Doing a media blitz announcing the good news, then reach out to the moderates in the middle.

2) Staying home and doing interviews on conservative talk radio.

Guess which one Bill “Shoot myself in the foot” Simon is doing?

Wherefore Art Though, Stable Windows?…

Wherefore Art Though, Stable Windows?

From The Shifted Librarian

Well, the comeback is still a bit of a ways off, thanks to Microsoft. Yesterday morning, as I was catching up on news and preparing to start posting again, I realized that restoring all of the original software that came with my PC meant setting it back to Internet Explorer 5.5, Outlook Express 5, and the first version of Windows ME.

Being a security-conscious kind of gal, I decided to install the newest Windows updates and get IE current in terms of security patches. Big mistake, as each installation froze my PC halfway through until it finally just threw up its proverbial hands in despair and again stopped booting up. *sigh*

So I’ve spent much of yesterday and today restoring all of the original software from the recovery disks yet again and trying to make my PC usable, not to mention stable. So not only have I lost even more blogging time, I’m missing all of the news that’s fit to print.

Thanks, Microsoft! Guess where I want to go today….

The Meathead vs. The Terminator?

The Meathead vs. The Terminator?

Rob Reiner, formerly of All in the Family, is a major player in liberal/progressive circles in California, and has headed successful statewide propositions.

Arnold Schwartzenegger, formerly of The Terminator, is a major player in conservative circles in California, and is heading a statewide proposition on the ballot in November.

Both are thought to have their eye on the governorship in 2006 when Gray Davis gets termed out (Yes, I’m assuming Simon loses in Nov.).

Truly, this would a race to look forward to….!

Great moments in US foreign…

Great moments in US foreign policy

Washington’s armchair assassins like Trent Lott who urge that we just take Saddam out are ignoring fifty years of less-than-stellar spook involvement in the Middle East. Here are some highlights collated by Eric Margolis of the Toronto Sun:

1947: CIA helps to mount a coup in Syria putting in power a dictator who they call our “our boy.” Dictator doesn’t like it. US has never had good relations with Syria since and two US-backed coups have failed.

1952: US helps in coup by Gammal Abdel Nasser. Nasser later became the Saddam Hussein of his era but CIA attempts to overthrow or assassinate him fail.

1953: CIA puts Shah in control of Iran. Shah uses US-trained secret police to suppress dissent helping to create the Islamic revolution.

1958: US installs a puppet regime in Lebanon, thus beginning 35 years of instability and civil war.

1958: CIA helps to put a promising young Iraqi leader in power: Saddam Hussein.

1960: Anwar Sadat goes on CIA payroll and the agency helps put him in power after Nassar’s death. He is eventually assassinated.

1969: CIA overthrows Libya’s British puppet King Idris, replacing him with a young reformist colonel, Muammar Khadaffi.

1976: US, Iran and Israel arm Iraqi Kurds in an effort to destabilize Iraq. One result: the Iran-Iraq war in which one million die.

1980: Hussein becomes America’s most important ally against Iran. Assistance includes access to biological and chemical weapons. <emphasis added>

1983: Efforts by US to install a Christian fascist in Lebanon and drive out the Syrians backfires when 309 Americans die in a bomb blast.

1996: Clinton orders a CIA coup against Hussein but plot is discovered by the Iraqi government, which destroys the whole CIA operation in Iraq and leads to the firing of CIA director John Deutch.

Says the Sun’s Margolis: “Republicans now urge more of the above, to keep the Mid East calm. You certainly can’t argue with success.”

Hunter Thompson speaks

Hunter Thompson speaks

Mr. Gonzo Journalism, the model for Duke in Doonesbury, the man who influenced a LOT of people, just did an interview.  He’s quite sane - and disturbed by what’s going on.  Timid media afraid to report the actual news.  A country about to fall into a “pit” of fear and police state actions.  “Thieves who wanted a few more zeros in their accounts” as CEO’s looting the public.  A country that picks fights across the world then wonders why they get into fights.  A country embarking on a lunatic war.  A cowed and fearful populace.

He has a new book coming out in December. The title? “Kingdom of Fear.” That’s basically how he views the state of the U.S. right now.

When our interview began, Thompson was watching a classic bit of Americana, circa 2002: a live CNN report about the police closing Alligator Alley, a stretch of highway in Florida, as they investigated a vague but worrisome report from a waitress in Georgia about a possible terrorist bomb threat.

Thompson said he was stunned by the attention stemming “from a conversation a woman overhears in some diner in Calhoun, Ga.” She then phones her fear in to “some tip line.”

Thompson didn’t even try to conceal his amazement that the police would go so far as to “shut down the interstate highway” and BLOW UP PEOPLE’S LUGGAGE!”

The CNN story was an example of what he called the media taking its devotion to sensationalism “past all limits of absurdity.

The interview is on audio, with the interviewer too obviously awed by Hunter. However, Hunter is re-emerging, and that can only be good.  His caustic presence is needed.
